Since DRNZ (Dinosaurs Rock New Zealand) has been on the Web, new dinosaur websites are popping up in New Zealand.

One dinosaur website has a lot of great dino info from around the world, but not too long after its home page finished loading a small window slid out from the side advertising a small commercial for TV with a violent scene and the program was called sex something... I would not want my child visiting this Dinosaur website.

It really makes me wonder if some people are really interested in Palaeontology or just the $$$ that they get from their pop ups while riding on the back of dinosaurs.

"These numbers validate there is a need out there for events that are educational and entertaining," said Sue Grosboll, museum director. "Even people who had been to the exhibit in Chicago said they liked it better here. T-Rex to reign at museum starting in October

Giant robotic dinosaurs. A cast of a dinosaur skull. Comparing your footprint to that of a T-Rex.
These are some of the attractions visitors can anticipate when the “T-Rex: King of the Dinosaurs” exhibit arrives at the Neville Public Museum.

The Neville will run the Tyrannosaurus rex exhibit from Oct.1 to Jan. 2, in part to commemorate the museum’s 90th anniversary. To pay for the exhibit, the museum will be using a $42,500 donation from the exhibit’s corporate sponsor, American Medical Security, a PacifiCare health systems company.

“We’ve had a lot of inquiries and a lot of public demand for this kind of exhibit,” said John Jacobs, curator of science for the museum. “The popularity of the dinosaur does go up and down, but it’s always popular.”

The exhibit will have 20 stations, many of them interactive, he said.
Some of the highlights will include a life-size sculpture of a T-Rex head, a cast of its skull, a scaled-down replica of itsskeleton and a cast of its leg. A cast of what a T-Rex nest of eggs might have looked like and tools used in the excavation of dinosaurs also will be on display.
In addition, visitors may make their own footprint and compare it to the size of a dinosaur’s and dig in a pit to find “fossils.”

By contrast, if dinosaurs are not a feature of the Millennium Dome then it is presumably because they have long since ceased to be seen as exclusive national property. As with industrialisation and cricket, so with dinosaur studies - a British lead soon melted away. Finds in England had mostly consisted of isolated teeth or bones, but from the 1870s complete skeletons began to be dug up in the Rockies. The lead in palaeontological research passed across the Atlantic, never to return, but it was the revelation of the dinosaurs' sheer scale that really impressed the American public, for many of the skeletons were the size of apartment blocks. Even in prehistoric times, it seemed, things in America had been the biggest and the best.

In fact, the great rush to excavate dinosaurs was a more fitting metaphor for the way their country was developing than most Americans would have cared to admit. Palaeontologists were borne west on the same flood of immigrants that wiped out both the buffalo and the Indian way of life. The greed for spectacular specimens led America's two leading palaeontologists, Professors Cope and Marsh, to pursue the most vicious personal rivalry in the history of science, as their rival gangs stole or smashed up each other's collections of bones. Eventually their struggle to establish a monopoly led to the ruin of both their fortunes; in a parody of his customary ruthless business practice, it was left to that arch-monopolist Andrew Carnegie to step in and take over the funding of the hunt for dinosaur bones. It was size he was interested in, colossal specimens that would match the monstrous scale of his own business interests. The skeleton that dominates the main hall of the London Natural History Museum was a gift from him, and still bears witness to Mammon's appropriation of the dinosaur: its scientific name remains Diplodocus Carnegii.

Nor has there ever been a time when they weren't roaming beyond the boundaries of scholarship. The first full-scale replicas of prehistoric monsters were built not for a museum but for the grounds of the Crystal Palace exhibition centre, where they remain to this day. Constructed of concrete, the most sophisticated building material then available, they were consciously presented as both proof and symbol of British scientific supremacy. The first dinosaurs had been discovered and categorized in England some 30 years before; however bizarre the Crystal Palace models may appear to us today, they were constructed according to the most up-to-date specifications of Richard Owen, the world's leading anatomist and the man who had first coined the word "dinosaur". Queen Victoria herself attended their opening, to admire the monsters which, in the words of their sculptor, Benjamin Hawkins, "the Almighty Creator designed to inhabit and precede us in possession of this part of the earth called Great Britain".

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh is in the process of making over its world-renowned dinosaur exhibit, which includes 15 soaring skeletons, some of which are several stories high. Among its dinosaur specimens is the first Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever discovered.

Of course, ubiquity can deaden us to wonder. It might seem strange that creatures so awesome to contemplate should also lend themselves so wholeheartedly to kitsch. But this is an ambiguity that has always lain at the heart of the dinosaur's image. Stephen Jay Gould has explained dinomania by referring to "the epitome proposed by a psychologist colleague: big, fierce, extinct- in other words, alluringly scary, but sufficiently safe". Dinosaurs are seen as "safe", patronisingly regarded as bywords for evolutionary failure, and it is that which makes them seem so ripe for commercial exploitation, even as they are also regarded as the ultimate in ferocity and size. Such a tension, between T Rex as a child's stuffed toy and as the lawyer-crunching, jeep-mauling monster of Jurassic Park, helps to illustrate why dinosaurs have no simple metaphorical value. They are defined by evolving scientific research, and yet science is unable to explain them altogether: into the gaps can be projected all our manifold obsessions and concerns, as mutable and contradictory as society itself. It turns out that the B-movies were right all along: just when you think you've got dinosaurs pinned down, they always break free.

In almost every children's book on dinosaurs, there is an illustration of a giant long-necked herbivore bellowing in agony as flesh is shredded from its flanks by a much smaller but fleeter-footed predator. It is the kind of image that must haunt a large, sluggishly performing organisation. Yet the BBC, which has lately been enduring a savaging such as any pack of velociraptors might have been proud to inflict, is turning to dinosaurs to help patch up its wounds. They are the subject of its flagship science series this autumn, and the fascination that they inspire should ensure that Walking with Dinosaurs is an enormous worldwide hit.

It is certainly doubtful whether the colossal [pounds]6 million budget required to bring the Mesozoic convincingly to life would ever have been committed to any other nature series. This reflects the rather depressing fact that dinosaurs are simply more intriguing to people, and more familiar as well, than the vast majority of creatures still alive upon the planet. In fact, so prevalent have images of them become, in books, films, toys and cartoons, that they must surely rank among the most familiar icons of a century that they predate by millions of years. Can there be anyone easier to buy a present for than a friend who likes dinosaurs? When it comes to dead celebrities, Elvis has nothing on tyrannosaurus rex.

Our son Harrison requested a dinosaur theme for his 5th Birthday. Like all busy parents we agreed without giving it to much though apart from fleeting consideration of suitably decorated party hats and balloons. All to quickly [3 days] before the party the reality hit home that we needed to be organized and in desperation we had a quick look on the internet for Dinosaur themed party supplies and found " Dinosaurs Rock NZ ". We couldn't believe our luck, we made the booking and the Dinosaurs team arrived Saturday morning to greet 15 small boys with a terrific array of dinosaur figures, fossils, games and a fantastic educational presentation.

Shanghai Customs seized eight dinosaur fossils earlier this month from smugglers who were attempting to sell them abroad, local customs officials said yesterday.
Customs officials found the suspected smuggler, who they would only identify by the surname Wei, had declared the fossils as decoration stone materials to the customs office on November 6.
The fossils, which are from a dinosaur found in China's southwestern Guizhou Province, are listed as one of the country's precious antiques and are not allowed to be taken abroad, according to Chinese Antique Protection Law.
Customs police arrested Wei and two suspected accomplices on November 12 and seized more than 500 fossils from Wei's residence.
Shanghai Customs said they got tips from Shenyang Customs in Liaoning Province in September that a gang of fossil smugglers from China's northern area is active in Zhejiang Province and Shanghai.
Wei and her husband Pascal who's a foreigner, were traced by police as they were noticed illegally buying dinosaur fossils in Beijing as well as Jiangsu and Liaoning provinces and then looking for overseas buyers through the Internet.
They then tried to mail the fossils to clients in Britain and the United States, officials said.
The dinosaur fossils found in Guizhou Province are the world's only such fossils from dinosaurs living in the sea, which scientists deemed very valuable.

UNI Museum/CFU join forces to bring dinosaur exhibit to Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS --- The University of Northern Iowa Museum nearly missed out on a giant opportunity.

Earlier this year, museum officials inquired about securing a replica of the largest, most complete and best preserved Tyrannosaurus rex ever found --- for a temporary exhibit from The Field Museum in Chicago. All they had to do was find an appropriate place for the 42-foot long, 16-foot high, life-size replica.

"We knew there was no way it would fit in this building," said Melissa Kruth, special exhibition coordinator at the UNI Museum. "We just don't have the space."

The original exhibit, known as SUE, is permanently housed at the Chicago museum.

A search for a building large enough and available to place a life-size replica was proving frustrating.

"We really wanted to bring SUE to Cedar Falls, but we were running out of options for places to put her," said UNI Museum Director Kay Thuesen.

Then she heard a building owned by the Cedar Falls Utilities might be worth checking out. Turns out the Cedar Falls Utilities Business Development Center at 1326 Waterloo Road, fit the size regulations necessary to hold the replica.

"We couldn't secure the exhibit or sign the contract until the field museum approved the building that we found," Kruth said. "It was a long process. We had to send them photographs of where the exhibit would be set up, building maintenance papers and all sorts of things."

The Field Museum in Chicago approved the site, and now Cedar Falls will be a scheduled stop on the national tour exhibit titled "A T. rex Named SUE." The exhibit will be here from March 5 through May 27, in the building many area residents know as the place where CFU holds its annual energy fair.

CFU was happy to help out. The building has been used for storage and training sessions.

"We're always glad when we can get additional community benefit out of any of our facilities," said CFU spokeswoman Betty Zeman. "It's an opportunity to partner with the museum to allow them to bring something to the Cedar Valley that's pretty exciting. We're glad to be able to participate."

Some minor renovations will be done to the building before the arrival of the exhibit. UNI Museum staff and many volunteer committees are coordinating efforts to prepare the building, which will be needing some cleaning, painting, assembly of temporary walls and some other alterations before the March 5 opening day.

"We're very excited," Kruth said. "It's right off of Highway 58 and still in central Cedar Falls."

Zeman has seen the original exhibit at the Field Museum.

"I think a lot of people are going to come to this exhibit," she said. "It's going to be a real treat for the community."
